There are many articles out there about how to get flights for cheap, and I have found a lot of useful information that I want to share with my community and anyone who may stumble across this article. Traveling abroad always seemed like a venture that will run your wallet and bank account dry. As a matter of fact, people hold back on traveling due to the exuberant cost of going on a vacation. We are caught up in that thought because the majority of us are restricting ourselves to planning a vacation in a set way.
In order to really capitalize on traveling and getting cheap flights, we have to think outside the box and be proactive with our planning. So without further delay, here are the top 8 ways how to get flights for cheap in 2019!
1. Search for Flights Using The Right Search Engine
No two search engines are made equally. As a result, when searching for cheap flights we have to use the most appropriate search engine for the task at hand.
When searching for flight it is recommended you use Momondo, Skyscanner and Google Flights.
Momondo – This search engine is perfect to get the ball rolling. Momondo actually gives back the largest results and will give the cheapest results 92% of the time.
Skyscanner – Just as good as Momondo. Just have a slightly better user interface and mobile app.
Google Flights – Last but not least we have Google Flights. I love this one in particular as it has a feature that allows you to track the prices for your trips and get email notifications whenever there is a price change.
When it comes to searching for cheap flights I use all the above sources and more. I would not recommend just sticking to one. The more the merrier but these three are an absolute must!
2. Be Flexible With Your Travel Dates and Times
I think this is one of the most popular points out there when you search for ways to get flights for cheap! It is mentioned a lot for a reason. At the end of the day, airlines are businesses operating to make a profit. They are not our besties pushing awesome deals our way year-round. Therefore, to get cheap flights being flexible will allow you to take advantage of the times they give out deals just to keep afloat.
So here are some things to watch out for when considering being flexible. Book flights during the week as the majority of people fly during the weekends. Also, early mornings and late evening flights are cheaper than the afternoon hours. Try to travel during the offseason! If you want to go to places like Paris go during spring or fall when fewer people tend to travel there.
In other words, do a little homework and get to know the seasons, how and where people move at different times of the year, and then plan accordingly. When fewer people travel that is when you want to make your move!
3. Be Flexible With Your Travel Destinations
When it comes to the flexibility we also cannot leave out being flexible with the destinations we want to travel to. Some destinations are more popular than others but that does not mean they are the only or absolute best locations.
There are a lot of hidden gems out there.
There are tools out there that help you discover places to go that will help you find those hidden gems.
How this works is you search for flights within your budget and then research the activities and things you can do nearby. Doing this will drastically change how your vacation goes and turns it into an adventure you will always remember and even feel proud of when you see you did all the planning.
Tools you can use to discover places are Kayak and Google Flights. Again Google flights being my favorite.
4. Do Not Always Fly Directly To Your Destination
I know we do not like the ‘inconvenience’ of the stops and the waiting. But for me when I weigh the amount of money it costs for the convenience and the amount of time that I can travel due to the savings, I rather save and travel more often.
This works out best for those long flights!
For example instead of flying straight to Paris from New York, you can get a cheaper flight by going to Barcelona first and then booking a flight from there to Paris. This is especially helpful if your travel dates are not so flexible and you still want to save some money on your flight.
A tool you can use to make this be done in a breeze is Airwander. This allows you to be able to see stopovers and compare prices. Another plus is that Airwander will also let you see budget airlines!
All you need to do is ensure that you crunch the flight times properly. You want to always have no less than 3 hours between your connected flights so you can board seamlessly on the following flight.
This method is not the most attractive because of all the careful planning involved but if done right can lead to big savings!
5. Fly With Budget Airlines
As time passes we have growth in the travel industry and one side effect of that growth is more competition among airlines and even the introduction of new ones. Therefore, we now have a wider variety of airlines to choose from and have some budget ones we can use to really get some sweet deals!
Now we can pretty much fly around the globe with budget carriers.
For example, to go to Paris from New York with Norwegian Airline, you can get prices as low as $140 one way!
I will assume you have no idea which airlines are budget airlines and as such will give you a list of the biggest and most popular budget airlines around today:
- Air Aisa
- Hong Kong Express
- Jeju Air
- Nok Air
- Peach Air
- Spice Jet
- Spring Airlines
- T’Way Airlines
- Tiger Air
- Vanilla Air
If you are a complete newbie here is a tip to get you started on the right track. If you want to know which airlines fly to which airport, simply check out the airport’s website and get the list of airlines that fly there.
The only thing left to do is to watch out for all the fees. Budget airlines make their money with all those fees such as fees for carry-ons, checked bags, printing your boarding pass and anything else they can get away with doing!
If you cannot travel without attracting too many fees be sure to check the cost against that of a larger carrier and ensure it is lower.
6. Book Flights In Advance
It is understandable that being flexible is not always an option. In that case, you should book your trip well in advance to get the best possible deal.
For this plan your trip 11 to 12 months in advance.
On the other hand, if you are very flexible 6 – 12 weeks in advance is the sweet spot.
7. Mix and Match Airlines
Before I mentioned not flying to your destination directly in order to get some massive savings. But also mixing and matching airlines is also viable when you have connections. You can use multiple airlines to reach your final destination and let it be a combination of budget airlines!
This will allow you to be able to go with the cheaper airlines.
Some resources that make this easy to do are;
8. Use Points and Miles Whenever Possible
Since we have to spend money daily for our cost of living why not get points or miles from those monies spent.
In my previous article How to Travel Cheap: The Ultimate Guide I mentioned two of the best programs that will get you the points you need to subsidize your flight expense and making you able to travel more each year.
There are people who practice travel hacking to get millions of miles and points each year. Due to those points not really having any monetary value, I would not recommend going overboard to get tons of points. I will do an in-depth article about travel hacking for those interested.
There are many options on ways how to get flights for cheap. Finding the cheapest flight will take some work but all that work will be rewarded in big savings.
