Growing up and having family all over the world, I got the chance to travel and see new places during my summer vacations. Becoming an adult, how to travel cheap became my top question every summer!
I never had to think about the expense of travelling before. But all good things come to an end … or so they say. I didn’t buy into that. I still wanted to travel the world and wanted to know how to travel cheap.
Rest assured I have found the perfect answer. Here is my list of things I do to be able to travel cheap year after year.
1. Expand Your Travel Ideas and Be Creative
The first thing you need to do to travel cheap is to change your mindset on vacationing. Think less about where you want to go and more about getting there cheaply.
When you do this you may find some hidden gem at a great price!
Also be creative when booking flights. Most times you can shave a lot off the cost of plane tickets by not picking the most obvious flight route. If you are not in a rush try booking a stop over flight. You can also travel cheap if you change the airlines or airports when booking and planning your flights.
2. Be Flexible and Travel When Its Low Season
We all know that the price for plane tickets can vary a lot. I have seen price skyrocket within minutes. To capitalize on getting cheap flights and travel cheap, you must be flexible.
On the other hand you can travel when its slow season, if you have the opportunity. Remember that other from the obvious summer time being the peak season for vacationing, you should also watch out for Christmas and Easter, as those time are likely to be expensive.
When you travel out of season you will get cheap flights and even quieter destinations to enjoy!
3. Pack Smart and Crush Baggage Fees
As a man I travel light by default 😂 I won’t bore you with how I do it though. Instead I fount this great video that basically tell all the ways I pack my luggage when going on a vacation.
What I will do though is tell you how I crush baggage fees!
Firstly know the fees associated with baggage on your intended airline. You want to be in the know so as to not be surprised when you get to the airport. You should also weight your bags to ensure that they meet the required weight that wont attract a fee.
I always walk with a laptop bag even if I am not carrying a laptop just to have that extra carry on space.
4. Join A Travel Rewards Program
This is a given if you want to and are traveling! Getting rewards that you can let stack up to earn you a free flight only makes vacationing each year not only possible but cheaper.
Did you know that airlines are switching to revenue based loyalty programs? This means you earn points depending on how much you spend rather than how many miles you actually fly.
The good news also is you can earn points from making approved partner purchases.
Here are some travel reward programs I recommend.
The Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card is great for the anyone due to having no annual or foreign transaction fees.
Perfect because you can just have the card around and you wont lose it.
There is a 25,000 online bonus points, and to get that all you need to spend is $1000 within the first 90 days of opening the account. It gets nicer! With this card you earn 1.5 points for every dollar spent using the card without any limitations.
Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card on the other hand is for the big spenders.
With this you will get two (2) miles for every dollar charged across all categories. Like the previous card you earn a bonus on money spent with this card within the first 90 days. $3000 will get you 50,000 bonus miles.
As I mentioned though this is for big spenders, and with a $95 annual fee, only get this if you are spending the amount necessary to make it make sense to own.
5. Travel Cheap with Wholesale Vacation Packages
Now here is my little secret.
This is the biggest money saver for me that allowed me to travel every single year and experience once in a lifetime experiences more than once! All without breaking the bank.
How this works is simple. Like Costco which uses the bulk buying concept and applies that to food products, you want to find a company that does the same but with travel vacations. Doing that will give you access to vacation packages with ridiculous savings, like how you get great savings on food at Costco.
Most of these options are members only, and exclusive but if you love to travel and want to travel more you are in the right place. Become a member of Chicify Club and get access to all our exclusive community offers and services.
Travel is not only for the rich! Stop having to save year after year just to go on one vacation.
If you follow all the steps above you will be able to see more places than you have ever imagined in you lifetime. Say good bye to your backyard for the summer and go on an extended road trip, or better yet an unforgettable DreamTrip!
